“Our lives improve only when we take chances - and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.”
-Walter Anderson

I know this quote speaks an important truth. It’s one thing to be honest with other people, but an even more important to be honest with yourself. Remember that you can’t give what you don’t have. I’ve been reading a series of books that talk about the habits and attitudes of great leaders, or Habitudes: Images that Form Leadership Habits and Attitudes. The books are written by Tim Elmore of the organization Growing Leaders. I’ll be talking about these more because they are really interesting. One leadership symbol was the starving baker. He has so much to be thankful for, but he starves because he gives away too much of his food.

The same goes for you. Don’t “starve” intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually fueling the lives of others. Be honest that you are who you are. Recognize your differences and talents because that is what makes you-YOU. Fend to your own growth first before you make a difference in the lives of other people. This quote does tend to come of in the wrong way and hint at selfishness, but the main point is this: How can you be honest to others and support them when you can’t even be honest with yourself? After you are honest with yourself, be honest with others. Of course, I’ve only touched on this topic. Think about it. =)

Sincerely,
Philosopher Matt
